Which would you take?
The Iconic 40 series
This truck had a little trouble with water, but its more a fluke than endemic of the truck. For the oldest truck there, it still killed it pretty good, and it was many people’s favorite.
The Classic Defender
the 300 TDi is the best of the engine for the truck, and the paint is wonderful. its a rough experience but its got a lot going for it.
The Sturdy Hilux
Warlord Outback approved workhorse for all time.
The beastly GQ Patrol
The burly TD42, the strongest axles in the business and built like a tank.
Personally, I would take the Patrol. I love those engines and even though I would prefer a GU patrol (Y61) I could be happy with this GQ.

I will admit to having little interest in owning a defender. As a romantic vehicle they are hard to top, but as something to live with its not my cup of tea. Date a defender, marry a Land Cruiser, or in this case a patrol.

While I love the Defender’s look, I have to go with the Hilux. I had that exact bumper on my old ‘92 4Runner.

Totally agree with regards to the Patrol, I’d love to experience one but they’re really not that common over here.

Probably the Patrol, I like the size and the relative amount of luxury. I’d love to have an FJ40, but not for the kind of trails they’re driving...more as a beach cruiser and for light trails.

Marry the patrol, but make it clear it needs to be an open relationship and keep the defender on the side.
I have a couple friends who own or have owned defenders and I’ve had the privilege of borrowing them for a few days, or weeks, and they’re great fun, even just bombing around town. But they don’t fit most situations comfortably enough to have it be your only off-roader/overlander/fun car.

Defender. Friend of a friend has one. I havent driven it, but those safari seats stole my heart. Super jealous. What can I say? I like highly stylized cars.

I have no direct experience with any of them. I think I am most drawn to the FJ simple because I have seen those around sporadically my whole life.

As much as I love the look of a defender, I wouldn’t trust my life with a Rover product.
Hilux because I’d be worried about ruining the FJ40, and good luck getting parts for the Patrol in the US.

That’s a RRC though, 1995 by the looks of the dash. Although fun fact, the RRC does infact have a slightly better ride than the P38.

I want to say Patrol, but who am I kidding? I’ll just regret it for the rest of my life and will always wonder “what if?”, so Defender.

The FJ for nostalgic reasons. Saw them everywhere as a kid in South and Central America. And of course I own the modern version now.

Yeah, I hear the ranger was by and far the champ for all around on this trip. not much an “Icon” but I did hear good things about it.

Sorry. Having sat in and driven in much the same Ranger in an off road situation. No. Just no. Sure its a capable vehicle and quite nice to drive BUT even as someone who stands here at six foot tall...it gives you the visibility of a Sherman tank. In trying to seem like a big truck the windscreen is too small, the doors too tall and the bonnet is vast.

GQ. Having owned or driven all of these vehicles in the past...still the GQ. Nissan knew the GQ was so good that the when it came to the GU they just put new panels on the old GQ body...
I used to regularly get fuel consumption of 17 litres per 100 km out of the TD42 on dirt roads... appalling but hilarious since I wasn’t paying. Mind you that country was hard cause I also destroyed 10 tyres on the GU ute in just 60,000 kilometres.

Not sure I should feed the bear here, but do you have any reasoning for this? Also, why not Chevy?

I only get called a bear in certain bars... LOL
I’m just a guy with a 78 GMC k15 that likes to brag. These are all great trucks but I posit that mine’s more capable off road, it’s easier to get parts, tows better. BUT they can carry more people with better gas mileage and have a great international flavor. So different strokes for different folks and all that.
Chevy? Same thing for the years I care about. (So far as trucks are concerned, I’ve had both name plates and a ranger to mix things up.)

Is a K15 a “heavy half” 4x4? I am not familiar. For sure parts availability is hard to beat in the US, but most American trucks seem to be more about hauling cargo than going off road. I doubt a gas V8 would get better FE than a diesel six, though.
Rykilla303

11/18/2016 at 14:37 | 0 |
Heavy half was one of the trim packages, but not on mine.
70's GM trucks all go by “C” (2wd) and “K” (4wd), even numbers for chevys, odd for gmc. C10, C20, C30, K5, K15, K25, etc. A few exceptions exist.
I agreed above with your conclusion about fuel economy (low teens!), but you couldn’t be more wrong about going offroad. A lift and some tires and you can get just about anywhere. It only suffers from bad turning radius.

11/18/2016 at 14:58 | 0 |
Yes, I know the chassis codes, but 15 is not one I’m familiar with. It would seem to be halfway between half and three quarter ton.
I get about 12 mpg with my 352. Fun times. Yes, they can get places when outfitted a bit, but are pretty big and the wheelbases are long unless you have a short bed. It would be interesting to see a comparison test against a more traditional off road truck. Mine has 2WD and an open diff, so I haven’t really gone anywhere a car couldn’t.

K10 - chevy
K15 - gmc
(Obviously, from there you had trim packages within. I was once the proud owner of a k10 “bonanza” lol)
